David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law,  delivered a lecture on Thursday, April 21, at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Johnston's talk focused on the subsidies offered to wealthy Americans, as well as the rules and regulations written into tax laws that might be unfamiliar to many Americans – and that allow for the wealthiest to gain even more.

Johnston served as tax reporter for The New York Times for 13 years until leaving in 2008. He now writes a regular column for Tax Analysts, and teaches tax, property and regulatory law at the College of Law. 

After winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his reporting on the loopholes and inequities in the U.S. tax code, Johnston wrote the award- winning "Perfectly Legal: the Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich-and Cheat Everybody Else," which became a New York Times bestseller. Johnston's most recent work is the acclaimed "Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense and Stick You with the Bill." He currently is working on his next book, "The Fine Print," which will be published later this year.
