Ping Zhang, professor at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool), has been granted a $20,000 stipend by Time Warner Cable for research on consumers and advertising. Her study, "Consumer Responses to Targeted Advertising," will increase understanding of how consumers view the perceived value and benefits of targeted advertising.

The new Time Warner Cable initiative, the Research Program on Digital Communications, grants stipends to foster research to increase an understanding of benefits and challenges facing the future of digital technologies in the home, office, classroom and community. Zhang's award is one of four proposed studies that Time Warner Cable selected to fund as part of its new program.

Zhang's research focuses on the broadly defined area of human-computer interaction (HCI). She teaches graduate courses at the Syracuse iSchool on HCI; information systems analysis and design; database systems; and data management. Zhang is co-editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, and is senior editor of Journal of the Association for Information Systems. She has been a member of the iSchool faculty since 1995.

Zhang received a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science from Peking University in Beijing and a Ph.D. in information systems, with minors in computer science and quantitative methods, from The University of Texas at Austin.
