SU hosts second annual Health, Wellness and Fitness Day Feb. 23

Syracuse University invites students, faculty and staff to the second annual Health, Wellness and Fitness Day, Feb. 23. The day will feature a series of events dedicated to taking care of one’s body and mind, and will take place at various locations on campus.

“This event is all about enhancing the wellness of students, faculty and staff at Syracuse University,” says Joseph Lore, director of the Department of Recreation Services. “Our staff is committed to educating the University community about the impact of healthy choices that may positively impact and support healthier behaviors, encouraging people to take a more active role in their own well-being.”

Attend any of the following free fitness classes:

  • Yoga at 7:45 a.m. in Flanagan Exercise Room, Archbold Gymnasium;
  • Mat Pilates at 12:10 p.m. in Flanagan Exercise Room, Archbold Gymnasium;
  • Power Hour at 12:10 p.m. in Ernie Davis Hall Exercise Room, and
  • Will Power and Grace at 5:10 p.m. in Archbold Exercise Room.

While in Archbold, check out a variety of exhibitors, including representatives from the Orange Wrap nutrition group, SU Food Services and the Counseling Center. Health Services will be on hand to conduct free blood pressure screenings. Free wellness information will be provided by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, the R.A.P.E. Center, Hendricks Chapel and the Zen Center of Syracuse.

“Prescription for Wellness” will take place in Room 500 of the Hall of Languages from noon-1:30 p.m. At this event, guests will learn about the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, financial and spiritual components of wellness and learn achievable ways to improve health. Interested in making small changes that make a difference in your health? Take the Strive-for-Five Personal Challenge:

  • work out in a fitness center or swimming pool for a minimum of 5 minutes;
  • eat a minimum of five fruits and vegetables throughout the day;
  • drink a minimum of five 16-ounce glasses of water, and
  • participate in a mini-triathlon: swim/row, bike, or run/walk a total of five miles.

If you have not yet visited the new fitness center in Ernie Davis Hall, stop by at 12:30 p.m. for a tour of the facility. Bring a friend for SU Plus-One, a partner training opportunity. Exercise with a colleague in this or any of the other fitness facilities on campus (valid SU/ESF ID card required for entry). Or enjoy free skate rentals throughout the day at Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion.
